Camshaft position sensor replacement

Camshaft position sensor replacement

The camshaft sensor informs the engine computer about the current position of the camshaft. The valve control mechanism position is determined based on this information. In addition, the camshaft sensor also provides the computer with information on whether the engine is on or off. Its failure affects engine operation and may disable it altogether.

Tips

  • Always replace the camshaft sensor with a new one
  • After replacing the sensor remember to cancel errors in the computer by means of a diagnostic tester

Scope of services

  • Disconnecting the sensor from the electrical system
  • Removing the bolts holding the sensor to the cylinder head
  • Removing the sensor from the cylinder head
  • Fitting a new sensor in
  • Reconnecting the sensor to the electrical system

Additional info about the service

What is the camshaft sensor?

It is one of the most important sensors in the modern car. It feeds the engine controller with information on the current position of the camshaft. The valve control mechanism position is determined based on this information. In addition, the camshaft sensor also provides the onboard computer with information on whether the engine is on or off.

When should the camshaft sensor be replaced and how is it done?

A camshaft sensor failure results in unstable operation of the engine and may even disable it altogether. Changing the sensor requires disconnecting it from the electrical system and removing the bolts holding it to the cylinder head. Next, a new sensor is fitted and connected to the electrical system.

What else to keep in mind?

After changing the sensor remember to cancel the error codes stored in the engine controller after the failure by means of a diagnostic scanner. If fitted properly, a new sensor should restore correct operation of the engine. The sensor itself is not repairable and cannot be reused in the event of a failure.
