What is the crankshaft sensor?

It is one of the most important sensors in the modern car. It provides the engine controller with information on the current position of the crankshaft. Its failure may result in wrong interpretation of the current working cycle of the pistons, wrong fuel dosing or producing an ignition spark in a wrong moment.

When should the crankshaft sensor be replaced?

A faulty sensor is not repairable and requires replacing. To this effect, the sensor must be disconnected from the electrical system, removed from the engine block and replaced with a new one. A diagnostic scanner may have to be connected to the engine computer to cancel the error codes stored after the sensor failure.

What else to keep in mind?

Driving with a faulty engine sensor, if at all possible, may cause a failure of other engine components and is generally dangerous, as the engine may fail when you least expect it, e.g. when driving through an intersection.
