Coolant replacement

Coolant replacement

The basic task of the coolant is to maintain the engine temperature at the right level and protect the cooling system against corrosion. The coolant circulates within the cooling system, preventing limescale and other material from settling in it. It also lubricates the water pump. Gradually, the coolant loses its properties, which may cause serious failures, including engine seizure or destruction of the engine block. The coolant should be changed every three years or every 60 thousand kilometres.

Tips

  • Do not add regular water to the system if you don't want it to rust. The sediment may clog the radiator channels and damage the water pump. It may also cause engine overheating and seizure.
  • If too thin, the coolant may freeze in winter and damage the engine block
  • Check the coolant level regularly
  • The proper engine temperature should range from 80 to 90 degrees centigrade. Control the temperature on the dashboard gauge .

Scope of services

  • Removing the cap from the expansion tank or the radiator
  • Unscrewing the drain plug on the radiator or on the lowest component of the system
  • Releasing the worn coolant
  • If necessary, cleaning the system with demineralized water
  • Fitting a new drain plug gasket
  • Refilling the system with fresh coolant
  • Starting the engine, allowing it to reach the working temperature and filling the expansion tank with coolant to the required level
  • Venting the system, if necessary
